  • The Rebirth and Growth of "Grace"

I have been posting my thoughts and responses on this blog as far as transitioning, etc. I felt that since I BC'd for the second time on May 22, 2011, that it was time for me to start my journal.
    Here is my story:
I transitioned the first time from June 1, 2008-June 1, 2009 and with 6 inches of hair, I big chopped. From June to February of 2010, I was fully natural, but I felt that if I wanted to get a job, my hair needed to be straight, so I permed it on March 1. However, after I permed it, the perm only loosened up my 3c curls and that was it. After flat ironing it and wearing it for a few days, I realized that it was not worth it for me to even have a perm if my hair was still going to be curly anyway. I missed my thick curlicues, and did not like those stringy curls that the perm gave me. So I made up my mind that I was going natural again, but this time I was going to transition for a longer time. This time, I transitioned for 14 months and three weeks before I cut my hair. I cut off 4-5 inches of permed hair once the clock struck 12 on May 22, 2011. Now I have between 7.5 and 8 inches of curly hair on my head, and I am so thankful to have my curlies back!!

I look forward to posting my thoughts and progress as I help to grow Grace into her fullest potential

Grace is indeed heavenly! Your hair is gorgeous. What do you use to keep Grace so moisturized?

Hey girl! Welcome to Curl Street and Congrats on your bc!! I agree, Grace does indeed look quite moist! Keep up the good work!
        Transition: October 23, 2010 - November 13, 2012!

        Unequivocably and unapologetically Southern!

I know it appears that what you're going through is unnecessary. It may be unnecessary for where you are but not for where you're going. This trial has a purpose.

I cowash and deep condition weekly with oils mixed in with my conditioner and the cholesterol that I use to deep condition overnight. I spray Grace daily with a spritz of distilled water/VO5 conditioner/oils, and I seal with castor, olive, or Africa's Best Herbal Oil. I keep my hair in mini twists or braids 90-95 percent of the time, and keep her in updos. Thanks for the compliment!

Thank you! I see that we live in the same state, about 1.5 hours away from each other. It's good to see some fellow North Carolinians on the forum.

Yes we do live close. I have been up that way several times. There is actually a NC Natural's social group on here as well.

Well, it has been 2 weeks since the BC and I thought I should check in and let you all know how Grace is doing. I still have her in the mini twists with braided roots, but I plan to twistout on this Friday before I travel to MD for my stepdaughter's graduation. I have noticed that it seems like I can't wear my mini twists in for longer than about 2-3 weeks like I used to when I was transitioning. This is partly because by then I am missing Grace being loose, but mostly because my twists get fuzzy more quickly than they used to. That's ok with me though, but maybe not the hubby because I will be spending more time taking care of Grace than before. We'll see... I have also noticed that although I know it was the right thing for me to do, I miss my length terribly! I didn't even have to cut my hair as low as some of the others that I've seen, but I still miss those 4-5 inches that I cut off. I just have to keep reminding myself that at this time next year, Grace will be even longer than she was at first.

I'm getting ready to go to my home state, Maryland, to celebrate the birth of my first grandchild, a granddaughter named Jamie Priscilla! I am so excited! I loosened my twists the other day and my hair feels a lot more fuller. I don't miss the extra length as much now. I still have the braids at the roots, though, so I decided to try some finger coils at the ends in the front of my head. I have never tried them before now, and I think I will do them again in the future to extend the time that my braids are in. The first picture is after I loosened the twists and the second picture is the coils.

Grace...and you...look beautiful! I LOVE coils...and they look so cute on you! Because my hair is so fine in the top, 2-strand twists are not my friend...LOL! Coils do the trick...

After the coils, try a coil-out...I think you'd love the results!
I KNOW I got good hair...It's AFRICAN in my family!

Thanks, I will try that. I want to try coils on my whole head one day.

It is July and Grace is in mini braids! I will try to keep these in from 6 weeks-2 months. I am on a mini protective style challenge until 8-31 with the BGLH forum now. These braids have been in for 2 weeks, but I took pics after they were first done. I am loving reborn Grace more and more.
