Hello there! I absolutely love this thread!! I have found it very helpful thus far. So I've been transitioning for about 5 months now and currently have been doing Bantu knot outs as my "go-to" protective style. I love love love it!! But I am planning on getting a fabulous sew in for my birthday and have a question regarding what procedures to take before having the sew in installed to help avoid excessive shedding and/or breakage. Should I do a deep conditioner? Protein treatment? Any product suggestions for these treatments? Also, how do I effectively take care of my transitioning hair while the sew in is in? How long should I keep the weave in? I was thinking about 2-3 weeks. Please help! I do not want any unpleasant surprises when I take my hair out. Thank you!! 😁

You can get any sew in you like. Try stay away from any sew in that requires a lot of heat. Just do not get your braids underneath your sew in to tight. I will repeat my self.... Do not get your sew in braids to tight. And to prevent shedding co-wash with oils. I like Jamaican black Castor oil. I mix my conditioner with the oil and that's i condition. Stops all shedding. post pictures... Happy hair styling

Hello, I have been transitioning since July 2011. For a year I flat ironed my hair every other week and by the grace of God I don't have heat damage. The last 6 months I have been doing braid out, rod sets and buns on which I rotate. Can you tell what your porosity is with relax end remaining and does the products you use effect the health of your hair? I really don't understand about humectants and when should use them or not use them. I think my hair looks dry but does not feel dry.

Default Questions

Hey Isacurls,
I am in the midst of my transition, just made it to my 5th month. Hair is currently in box braids. I plan to keep them for a month or so but have no idea what to do with it when I take them out. I never styled my hair when it was relaxed so I definitely don't know how to style a hair with two textures. I was thinking about either trying a flexi rod set or a Dominican blowout. I know people say Dominican blowouts have too much heat but the woman whom I want to go to says she doesn't use that much heat. Plus she says it lasts 5 weeks and I need something easy and that lasts a while. Also I am used to it. I usually only wear my hair down all the time. But I haven't had my straight hair in 3 months. I miss it What do you suggest? Also I'm attaching a picture of my hair at about 4 months in a roller set with fallen curls that I transformed somewhat into a style. I put a bump in the front. I can't tell if those are curls or waves. Can you? My hair was dry in this pic by the way. I think I have about two inches worth of new growth. Although one inch was straight and wiry, I think it just took time for the curls to come in. Sorry for typing a book lol Please advise!

I always tell my transitioning ladies to get to know there hair before using box braids!! Or protective styling. What you can do is find out your hair texture. It will make your life so much easier. Because there are people on YouTube that document their hair texture and you can learn how to style your hair. I did a lot of braid outs when I was transitioning. It blend both hair textures together. When I was transitioning I straightened my 2 times. You can't straighten hair whenever you want. I'm not going to tell you not to straighten it but I will give you two reasons why you should not: 1. We all ready know that heat will mess up your curl pattern right.
2.it will mess up you confidence in your natural hair.
3. If you always have you hair straight how will you manage when you can't make to the beauty supply.
Things will get easier if you do your research. If you don't know how to mange your hair now learn. Because when you have a lot of new growth what will you do? Go in YouTube and start off by searching how to detangle transitioning hair. Then look for hair styles for lazy day. Little by little. You will find things that you like to do with your hair and you won't always want it straight.

Your very welcome.. Sealing would be moisturizing your edges and your ends. And then protective styling. You should do this every night. Everybody seals differently with their hair. Remembers always wear a scarf.

Hi isacurls! I've been transitioning for 7 months now. I plan to go a year before I bc. I use no heat, I cowash and my go to style of choice has been a braid out. My question is if am noticing a little more shedding than usual, and some breakage but it is minimal is this normal? Also can you tell me what hair type I am?
