Default How to stretch new growth

Hi everyone. I've been transitioning for 7 months now and my hair is currently flatironed. (don't worry I know about heat damage this is my first time flatironing in months). I have done every transitioning style imaginable. But sometimes I just want to wash my hair and throw it back into a slicked back bun. I haven't been able to do this because my hair is soooo thick! Does anyone know how I could possible stretch my new growth out while it is air drying?

Banding is when you use covered elastics to make small ponytails with extra bands down the length of the ponytail while your hair is drying. You can put oils or whatever on your hair while it's wet. It's a thread on it do a search. I may not be explaining it the best!

I only have about 4 to 5 inches of new growth all around. So I'm not sure that banding will be of any help since the majority of my hair is still relaxed.

There are women with 3 inches of hair that band to stretch it out for a full on Afro. You should be able to do it with 4-5 inches for sure

Banding is good for some ppl, but personally I don't like it bc it take my hair an eternity to dry. For me, I like to but big plaits in my hair. Think cornrows, but instead of little ones, like 2-4 over your whole head. I used to do this air dry my relaxed hair as well.

I band my natural hair all the time..and it literally straightens my hair out. Some people band with many sections. I only band 4 sections of my hair..two sections in the front and two sections in the back. It depends on how long your hair is. You just basically put hair elastics down the length of you hair.

Here's a preview of my banded hair:
