Default Senegalese Twist: Winter Protective Style

Hi ladies!

I'm looking for a winter protective style. I have never had braids or twists before so I am kind of clueless.

I had a few questions regarding care of the braids and my own hair.
I big chopped sept 2012 and my hair is about 2 1/2 inches stretched right now.

1) how long should I keep the braids in?
2) how do I go about washing and conditioning my hair?
3) Do I need to oil my scalp while in braids?
4) How do I keep my natural hair healthy while in this style?
5) Anyone have any adverse effects from senegalese twists?
6) Anyone swear by them/recommend other types of protective styles?

Thanks!! Looking forward to the answers!

*bump*

I would like to know more about this myself. I'm 8 mos. transitioning now and have about 14 inches of relaxed hair. Wondering if this style is practical for me.

they are a really good protective style. i actually did my whole transition with micros. i didn't get senegalese twists until about 6 months after i cut my permed ends off. when i had mine i kept them in for just over 2 months, but that's because my hair grew like crazy. as far as washing, you can use a dry shampoo or you can do an apple cidar vinegar wash, but i higly recommend you do this at night. definitely oil your scalp, if not your hair will be very dry and brittle when you take the twists out. the only bad thing about braids/twists is they are usually done very small around the edges and that a lot of pulling on that small amount of hair, but if you put castor oil around them they should be fine.
