Default Hard to style hair

I have 3 different hair types which makes my almost 3-4inches of hair very hard to style. My crown has very loose s pattern wave, and its rather soft and does not hold curls, twist, braids, or any other styles at all. I'm not sure what type that would be. My sides are 3c and the very back is 4a. I've tried twist outs, braid outs, and coils without out any luck because my crown refuses to cooperate. I am also confused as to what products I should use because I notice a lot of buildup in my crown area but my back never feels as though it has enough. I need help.
