I BC'd my shoulder length relaxed hair in March because I was worried about the health effects of relaxers. My sleek TWA that got so many compliments in the spring and summer (even on my wedding day!) has grown into a very dense, very tightly coiled fro. Lumpy and bumpy, without any natural curl definition. My hair is no longer getting the love it used to from friends and strangers. I have to admit, I'm not wild about it myself.

I tell myself that my hair is thick and healthy and therefore it is beautiful. I tell myself that most folks are just brainwashed into thinking shrunken, kinky hair ( 4C ) is unattractive without lots of manipulation or products. I tell myself my husband loves me and my hair no matter what. I tell myself someday soon my TWA will grow into a fabulous, versatile BAA. Right??? Sigh.

So, today when I saw a CN blog post that said hair like mine could take *2 to 4 years* to grow out of its TWA stage, I almost burst into tears.

Four years before I have anything more than a tight wooly cap of hair??? I really need some encouragement to stay on this natural path. I've never felt this bad about my hair.

Any thoughts, ladies?
Thanks for sharing your story!! I havent big chopped, yet but I still enjoy reading the "story" of those that have. You always hear the positives, the raves of how liberating & freeing big chopping is but never the following up weeks or months later.

I think you hair looks great, have you tried a creme or butter to just define your hair?!!? 'Cause I see curls it looks nothing like you describe...it looks better!! I have heard folks say how Wild Growth Oil massaged on their scalp daily helped their hair grow fast, give it a try and good luck, sis!

I saw that post, and quickly corrected the poster that it takes 2-4 years to grow out of twa stage....if that were the case I should be in twa still. what she said completely disregarded how much hair grows a year....Her math is wrong. I don't appreciate miseducation being disseminated.

I have 4 type hair, and my curl pattern didn't come apparent when hair reached past shoulder unstretch (time will fly before you know it) with the right conditioner.

The one thing I can say is that you can't depend on others with regards your self-esteem and thus, acceptance, of your hair. This is not about them....this life is about YOU.

In the mean time, have u thought about changing up your 'do for a bit? Mini twists set on rods, yarn braids, going to a natural stylist etc?

I know exactly how you feel. EXACTLY. I have been looking for a post by someone who feel the same as me. My relaxed hair was just past my shoulders and I bc'd in April. I dont think Im going to be natural forever. My hair just isnt growing fast enuf, even when I straighten it. My boyfriend keeps asking why I cut it. Not that he doesnt like it, he is just use to me with long hair. Email me, maybe we can encourage each other. Hotchick256@gmail.com

Dont let that keep u down. Get out of the TWA stage whenever u feel like u need to, not what the hair rules tells u when ure out of it. To me being out of the TWA stage is when it stops looking like an afro and can put it in pony tails
