My stylist told me I have 3c/4a. Only a few days in mind you to the short version, but I was advised at Uncle Funky's Daughter hair salon not to even use gel. I shampoo, condition, and use a leave-in moisturizer I'm getting curls even on my TWA. I've have had a longer fro a few years ago and even then I was literally wash and go and my curls formed by themselves. If your curls need more definition, I'd still go with a leave-in moisturizing definer over a gel.

I'm just curious. Why did your salon tell you not to use gel?

What about Pantene or finesse conditioner. They are on sale this week and I wanted reviews before purchasing.

I got pantene and tried it today...was not as slippery as I expected...used with s-curl as a leave-in...my bun is soft...but I def prefer aussie moist for slip. I love the clean scent though!!! I'd only repurchase when on sale.

Tonya said it inhibits hair growth and that most curly girls don't need it. It's not like we're setting a style unnatural to our hair and we're trying to keep it. I naturally have curls, so I don't have to fight to keep my own texture. The curls popping up regardless and I live in Humidity. I could understand the need for defrizzing, by gel isn't the best solution for that either.

I did one with my leave in only and it came out good. Everybody was complimenting me but it was a little frizzy. I love gel though. I make sure not to be heavy handed so I don't experience the crunch. As long as I use a moisturizing leave in i'm good. No two heads are alike though.

I have seen curlies with amazing growth who have used gel almost their whole journey. We do what works.

Just chiming in re: gel inhibiting growth...I am proof that this is not true. My first 3 yrs as a natural I only did wash and gos and used gel for at least 2 years and my hair grew like weeds in those 2 years. I was almost BSL by the time I was 2 years natural.

Probably depends on the gel.Your hair may grow fast. Heaven forbid Tonya was wrong. LOL.. Fateemah and Tonya have two different textures of hair and both ladies had beautiful thick, long hair without using gels. I don't think all gels are bad, but she prescribed gel free for my hair type. I have defined wavy curls which are probably not showing in my iPhoto picture, but I wash, condition, moisturize and I'm good. I want touchable hair so the idea works for me.
