Default Porosity Question

Does anyone have any idea what I can do with my 2yr olds hair to help it stay moisturized? I suspect her hair is low porosity because anything I put on it just sits on her hair. Even when I wash or cowash, her hair doesn't seem to get 'soaked', and it dries very quickly. Her hair isn't very thick and is short. I have used EVERYTHING (i think), like SM, Curls, HS 14 in 1, Kinky Curly, Bee Mine, various oils, glycerine, shea butter, LOC method, etc. Nothing seems to penetrate her strands. I apply everything while wet, and once it dries it's dry. I usually plait it or let her wear a fro. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I'm still figuring this out with my 2 y/o. We have the same issues you listed. So far here is what's working. We still have a way to go.

I cowash once a week. While her hair is wet (for those first few minutes) I apply a leave in. Right now it's KBB sweet ambrosia. I apply it in sections generously. Then I apply coconut oil in the same manner. When I style I add GENEROUS amount of unrefined Shea butter to each bit I'm working on and this seems to do the trick for us. I have been putting her hair in small twists and each twist I put a good amount of Shea before twisting. As I work through her hair I spray any section that's dried our with water mixed with EVCO to dampen before I proceed with the Shea and twists. Every morning I spritz with the water/oil mix and apply KBB creamylicious to add more moisture. I know her hair would stay better moisturized if i could get her to keep on a satin bonnet but that's just not happening.

Since I know her hair is low porosity I think I need to re-wet and restyle mud week but I haven't had the time and with a newborn on the way I'm guessing I won't have the time for a while. But I really believe that if I did that it would help.

I'm curious to read other suggestions because this is a struggle for is as well.

Try products that are not as thick and rich or make sure you use a tiny amount if you do use them. Also, use moist heat to help the products absorb and you probably will be well served to pre-poo overnight to allow time for absorption. I would suggest you minimize "out" styles until you get a handle on the dryness.

Thanks for the reply. It seems like our routines are similar. I am heavy handed with the products, but it seems like you may be a little more so, lol. I didn't mention before, but I do spritz and reapply leave in and seal daily, but it still seems dry. Imma try using more product and see how that goes. Someone on another thread suggested trying a silicone serum, so I'll try that as well. I feel you on the satin bonnet; even if I could find one that fits her little head, I doubt she'd keep it on. I'd also worry it could slip off and be a potential suffocation hazard. Thanks again and congrats on the upcoming new arrival!

Thanks. I never thought of using 'less' products before, so I guess thats worth a shot too. As far as using moist heat and prepooing, those aren't options right now because of her age. And your right about the 'out' styles. I only do those once per week since it gets so tangled. Thanks again!

Thanks! I'm very excited about having another little lady around the house but have no idea how I'm going to manage two heads of hair!

If you use the silicone serums you'll have to shampoo to get them out. I've avoided them because I don't use shampoo at all. but if you find it working let me know. Maybe it'll change my thoughts on shampoo. Lol!

Kag, if she won't keep something on her head you can still prepoo. Use oil, condish, or both and simply put in 4 braids. You can do this overnight or just a few hours before washing. moist heat could be putting on a cap and let her body heat help the oil/condish absorb or one of those turbans, if she tolerates it. Just a few ideas, ultimately u know what she will tolerate
