Also, at some restaurants, the waiters/waitress have to pay a tip out to the hostess and bartender. I would go into more detail about how everything works, but I'll digress.

When I was a server, my coworker told me a really bad joke about black folks and tipping. It's always a stigma so people don't expect us to tip anyway. I understand the op wasn't sure what to do, but some of these responses are just...

When my money is funny and my strange is change, I pick up something through a fast food drive thru or hit the grocery store. I believe if you can't afford to tip, you can't afford to eat at a restaurant with a waiter, waitress, or call for delivery. Servers DO live off those tips. Pizza delivery people do not get the delivery charge listed on the receipt and they drive their personal vehicles to deliver your pizzas and are not reimbursed for gas.

The argument that they should get a better/different job is not always valid. Some of them are students who can only work certain hours due to classes and for others, this is a second job.

What does the server/host have to do with all that, its not like they clean the table.

Weather or not they clean their tables depends on the establishment. Some places have busboys others would rather take the cheap route and not hire them. They would rather have their hosts and servers do that themselves. And on extra busy nights they have people from previous shifts come in to bust tables so that they don't get behind.

Lol sorry for my mini rant. That brought back memories.

I agree. The restaurant business is a money pit. That is why so many small food joints close. They save money by paying staff a low wage and letting them work for tips. This hopefully means staff will be nicer to customers who are actually paying their services with tips. Staff being nicer to customers mean customers who return to the restaurant and tell their friends.

I don't go out or order in unless I have enough money for a decent tip. I usually give 20% or higher. No less unless the service is awful. The service, not the food. I complain to the manager if the food is bad.

+1 It all depends on the business. Where I worked, since the hostess was in charge of making sure you section was full based on rotation, and sometimes, they'd help clean, there was a tip out. Then I had to tip out the bartender who made my special dessert drinks and desserts. I worked at a place where it was busy on the weekends but the place was inexpensive. It's a small diner in Charlotte. So, during lunch, we were crowded. The meals were only lke $6. So your tip would be $1 or $2. Imagine how many tables we had to get in order to walk away with $50 at 2pm.

I know this an older thread, but I just came across it...so, my 2 cents...

I don't have a problem tipping and I usually try for 15% to 20%, especially if the service is good. BUT I do have a problem where you think you are going to automatically keep my change. Where they do that at? I've had it happen at 2 restaurants and with one pizza delivery person. How about you LET ME tip you rather than you STEAL my money...(which is what is happening when you keep my money without my permission)...no matter how much or how little the change is?

The first waitress kept $2 of my change when I was prepared to give her at $7 tip. Then when I thought about the fact that she stole my money, I called the restaurant manager.

The second waitress kept about $0.50. I asked for my change and she said "It was only $0.50." I was like "Really?" I was about to give her a $5 tip...but I guess she was willing to settle for $0.50.

Oh, well...I guess crime really doesn't pay...

I'm from the UK, you best give me my change! Lol!

I've also worked minimum wage job in an industry that doesn't give tips. I didn't work any less hard than waiters/waitresses and I was polite and kind to everybody not because of tips obviously, but not even because of policy, but because it is easy (for me).
I'm also pretty sure even wait staff must get minimum wage by law here, tips are either shared by everyone or specific to the server.
I don't get it. If someone delivers my pizza, why do they deserve the extra more than the person getting acne back in the hot kitchen putting my pizza together, or the fruit and veg pickers who come from Eastern Europe to do the long, back-achingly hard jobs that people here don't want to do or the factory workers who tin the tomatoes the pizza place uses? (all minimum wage earners) Why does the last face deserve the tip most?

Saying all that, I am a hypocrite though so I will usually let them have the change ($4 is about £2.50 right? yeah, that's fine) especially if they've come from a long way, but best believe if I don't feel like doing it, then I am in no way obliged to.
If I can't tell people to chose their jobs wisely, then no one can tell me I shouldn't use a service because I wish to pay only the advertised costs and I should eat elsewhere. What kind of foolishness?
And I am certainly, CERTAINLY not going to spend extra just to stop racial ignorance. I'm an idiot if I think people will not find something else to criticize my race for if we all suddenly started tipping frantically or they won't think I'm the lone 'exception' if they see me tipping. Their ignorance is not my problem.

I'm done.

I don't usually tip large on pick up orders but delivery is along the same lines of being waited on @ a restaurant. They bring your food TO you. You should always tip no less than 15% if service is at least Fair. There's no reason not to.

If you don't believe in tipping then you shouldn't do things that would require or encourage you to tip.

Would you not tip your hairstylist?

But then again I may be biased bc I waited tables & was a bartender for over 6 yrs. $2.15 an hr is nothing so yes they're lively hood depends on tips.... & that's why I got out of this business. People that use your service don't care & I got tired of working my butt off to provide great customer service & get zilch for it.
