Well, honestly I thought about doing this later on in my life until a life changing experience occurred. After several signs that I have ignored for the past year and a half, I was in excruciating amount of pain Oct 30-31 until I could not take it anymore and went to the hospital. I then learned I had a huge twisted ovarian cyst (10). I had to have an emergency unilateral salpingo-oophorectomy: Removal of my Right ovary and Fallopian tube. Ever since, I've been making life changes in my life including diet and my decision to no longer relaxe my hair. My father, who is a surgeon, was ready to give me the talk and was chocked I decided all on my own to go natural. Originally, I had planned on transitioning for a period of 6 months but one night, I had the urge and cut it and Never regretted. I had many concerns of course, but I've been doing a lot of research for the last couple of weeks and now know that I should of embraced this a long time ago. I do feel a little discourage at times because don't quiet know what to use since I'm still in the trying phase. But I'm getting a hang of it but all advices are welcomed regarding products to styling and how to maintain beautiful hair.

I had actually been at the "touch up" point one day and decided, ima not get a relaxer and let my hair grow out a little more then get a perm in a few weeks. Well that didn't work too well. Long story short I didn't take care of that sensitive spot between relaxed hair and natural hair. I literally woke up and all my relaxed hair had fallen out the back half of my head. I ran to the salon and just had her chop the rest off. Natural ever since! Lol

I have a supervisor that is natural. Her hair looks good.I thought I could never do that. I decided to finally go natural after watching the movie Good Hair, last year. I'm still trying to find what works for my hair. I am so glad for youtube and sites like these for help.

I got my first perm really young, I kept seeing girls on campus with natural hair and decided to see what my hair looked like in its natural state.

I feel so stupid...but I'd been getting my hair permed since I was 7 and I honestly didn't know natural was a thing. I truly thought that it was my only option, and when I only -ever- saw natural girls on tv. I didn't realize they were "natural". I'm not trying to hate, but all the girls I saw on tv were of a very light complexion and always had those big sharpie curls, so I figured they were mixed and thats why their hair was curly. I truly thought black people couldn't have coily hair, just straight kinks. I was really unhappy with my hair and constantly got chemical burns. One day I went to visit my brother and his wife had let her natural hair grow out. She'd always been natural but I was used to seeing her with a fade or intricate braids in. I spent a week with my bro and got a crash course in natural. There were tons of natural women in the street (of all skin tones), my sister in law, the baby sitter...everyone! So I was like, heck yeah! Honestly, if I'd known what natural was I would have done it a long, long long time ago. I lived in a very small ghetto town, didn't watch a lot of tv, and wasn't that interested in my hair other then dreading that next perm. Looking in hair magazines made me sad and there was only ever one natural girl in my entire school (half latino, light complexion, big sharpie curls). I've just been ignorant all my life and I feel really ashamed when people ask me how I got the courage to go natural. It didn't take any courage to shave my head, I was just ignorant to my other options of hair care. There was never the good hair bad hair thing in my house, my mom didn't put up a big fuss when I wanted to go natural and get a fade, nothing like that. I'd been accustomed to perms all my life, they ruined my hair, I felt embarrassed and flustered with my hair so I stopped paying attention to it and other peoples hair, it wasn't until my sister in law stepped out of the car to pick me up rocking a crazy afro puff that I was like "What, the, HECK are you doing to your hair?" And then I just went and shaved my head, simple.

My hair never grew past shoulder length plus I loved the versatility of it.

I have a few reasons:
1. My hair was healthiest, fullest and LONGEST when it was natural:Bsl/Mbl After my first relaxer,at age 12, my hair broke from BSL to SL until I learned about hair care. Then, it grew to Apl/Bsb but stopped. 2. I'm cheap and can't see spending $50 per 3 months for a professional relaxer. 3. I'm too scared to self relax. 4. After wigging for 6 months, the new growth fascinated me and I wanted to keep going 5. I want to be able to take care of my hair on my own. 6. My relaxed hair was always thin and I never knew why. My natural hair is soo much more thicker. |
