Need a big sis

Post by MomnWife on 24th February 2010, 11:54 am

Hi, my name is Desiree. I just cut my hair yesterday. It looks good, but I want it to looks it's best. I haven't seen my hair in it's natural state since I was a child, so I am clueless on how to take care of it. I am a home schooling, work at home mom, but I still want to look good in my house.

I don't clean my house with chemicals, so I don't know why I continued to use them on myself. Just in the few hours that I have been natural, it has been totally freeing.

I would love some guidance and encouragement to grow my natural, healthy hair.

I've only been natural 6 months but I will continue to help you if you'd like me too.

Woohoo, I would love that! Did you notice the avatar change? I did take your advice yesterday and that was the result. It's getting better! I'm loving my hair!!

Thanks Lynnieluve.

That is just suave coconut for the cowash, then some tea tree oil, then some gel.

Now, I still have my hair tied. When I am ready to go out, do I just spray it with water? I shouldn't need more gel, right? It was a little crunchy once it completely dried.

I need to buy a leave in conditioner today. What kind do you use?

When my hair was that length, I would spray it with water and not touch it. In about 5 minutes, it would bounce back.

Do you have some olive oil? If you put just a little bit in your hands and rub it together, and scrunch it into your hair, it should help with the crunchies.

My favorite leave in conditioner is Giovanni Direct Leave In. You can find it at Walmart or Target. It's not gonna be with the other hair products. It will be in the make up area with the other organic products.

Ok, great1 I am about 5 minutes from Target. I can stop there. I can get some olive oil, too. I don't usually buy it because it is kind of expensive to cook with, but I will buy if for my hair.

So, i saw that I should cowash once or twice a week and deep condition once a week. If I only cowash once a week, do a dc at the same time, so that I am actually doing everything once a week? It's not like, cowash on friday and then dc on say, Tuesday, is it?

When you purchase the olive oil, make sure it is the Extra Virgin Olive Oil. I usually get the store brand because it is a little bit cheaper.

Yes, you can co wash and dc on the same day. That's how I do it. It is very important that you deep condition once a week. As you do it, you will notice your hair will get softer and hold moisture better. At least that's my observation with my hair.

Phooey...They didn't have the Giovanni at my Target. I will check Walmart sometime this weekend. I didn't have a plan B, so I just left without getting anything.

Oh, I did buy some stuff. Just nothing as far as conditioner goes...LOL

I bought my hubby a present, so I wouldn't get in trouble...hehe.

Since, I now have a "big sis" I have another question. My daughter is biracial, but her hair is curly. It's a loose curl. Should I be approaching her curls the same way that I do mine? Cowash, etc.

Ok, this morning I sprayed my hair with some more water. Just now, I looked in the mirror and it is starting to loose it's curl definition and feels dry. Do I need to go ahead and do a deep conditioning?

As for tips for your daughters hair, go to the curlfriends section of this forum and Click on "Ask NikG of Beadsbraidsbeyond" NikG is really sweet. She will be more than willing to help you. You will see some really cute little girl hair styles too.

If your hair is feeling dry, yes I would recommend you deep condition.

Yeah, but I would never hit up the other one on a Sunday. There are at least five that I can hit up when I am out doing other things. I'm not going to make a special trip.

You can try to make a homemade leave in conditioner in the meantime. I've made one using water (80%) a light conditioner -VO5 (15%) and a olive oil (5%). Shake it up and spray. I usually put it in one of the finger tip spray bottles.

I've also mixed conditioner (25%) and water (75%) too. You will have to play around with the mixes until you find one your hair likes. That's why I put it in a small spray bottle. I found the spray bottle in the trial size area at Walmart or Target.

I may have to order this stuff online. I went to a different Walmart today and they had everything, but the direct leave in.

I did pick up some EVOO, though!

I still haven't bought the direct leave in. I did find it, but figured I would wait. I have just been sticking to the basics and it's been working.
