I began a transition after a relaxer in July 2011. It was out if necessity since the area I moved to with J(sounds more personal than SO) didn't have many hair salons that catered to afro-textured hair and the ones that did offer touch ups charged ridiculous amounts of money. On top of that I just don't like salons. When I did go, I almost always spent the whole day there. My sister was normally the one who gave me a touch up but, we lived over 2hrs away from her after the move.
I was doing fine with the transition until January 2012. I took down my braids on my day off and couldn't detangle my hair. I had a dramatic hormone induced breakdown (I was pregnant) and had my sister relax my hair. I quickly regretted it because I was stuck again without anyone to touch me up every 10-12 weeks. Plus, I didn't really like getting relaxers and touch ups. I only got it done because I had been getting them ever since I was a kid. I ended up transitioning again and stuck with it because I found out we were having a girl. I wasn't going to relax her hair no matter what. So I thought I should lead by example. She is also biracial and I want her to accept and understand her blackness as well as her hispanic side. This transition was smoother and lasted 9 months until I BC'd in September 2012. I BC'd as a form of statement to a coworker who offended me. No one at my previous job knew that I was transitioning to natural hair and I never spoke about hair at all. She asked me if I was glad that my daughter got her father's hair and not mine. I asked her, "what's wrong with my hair?" ( I was feeling myself during my pregnancy. I knew I looked good and glowy at work) She couldn't answer my question. I then I told her I was too focused on the health of my baby. How my baby's hair was going to look the last thing on my mind. It was time for my relaxed ends to go. It felt good cutting it all off. Refreshing and Liberating. I have good days and bad days but I haven't regretted cutting my hair or becoming natural and I don't think I will. I'm still figuring out the right products for my hair and as result I have become a slight PJ.(I love Jamaican black castor oil) I wear box braids or kinky twists a lot as a protective style and learned how to do them during my first transition. When my hair is free I attempt braid/twist outs but I haven't had any luck yet. Sent from my SGH-T999 using CurlyNikki App Last edited by keema; 02-15-2013 at 12:06 PM. |

I finished my box braids earlier this week. I hope to keep them in for at least 8 weeks. Ive been spraying my hair regularly with JBCO, EVOO, teatree oil, mixed with water. I'll probably wash or ACV rinse (havent made up my mind) my braids in 2 weeks.
My daughter has taken a liking to my braids and has been touching or pulling them when whenever she gets the chance. *sigh ponytails are protecting me from having no edges right now. Sent from my SGH-T999 using CurlyNikki App |

Yes my little girls love playing in my hair and sometimes it feels so good I (regretfully) won't make them stop.

We took a day trip to visit my mom and 2 sisters. They all went natural around the same time as me and transitioned about 2 years.
She also keeps trying to push grease on me and my daughter. I never liked grease as a child. My mom was heavyhanded with it and the greasy forehead, greasy hands, greasy neck and having it run down my face when it was hot out just put me off. My daughter's hair is fine and thin, grease will only make it greasy and weigh it down. Her hair is clean, healthy and well cared for. My mom also preached about how I should put KC's(my daughter) hair in a bunch of barrettes (can you say tension alopecia?) more often rather than letting her hair be free. I like her curly fro, it's massive and awesome. The most I do is a headband or a bow, nothing tight or pulled back. I remember those ball barrettes along with the grease. My mom use to put those on my hair all extra tight, having my head hurting. No thank you mom, my child is fine. Sent from my SGH-T999 using CurlyNikki App |

I've been moisturizing as needed with a mixture of water, evoo, jbco and teatree oil. My braids are getting frizzy where my natural hair is located. Darn. It's probably the water in the spray bottle. My hair is soft though so o well I guess. My scalp is relatively flake free too, which is always good. When i was relaxed, I had the driest flakiest scalp ever. I thought I was just prone to flaky scalp but I think it was the relaxer.
I'm in love with shea moisture period. I tried the curl &style milk on my babe's hair and her curls popped. Sent from my SGH-T999 using CurlyNikki App |

Hmm I'm going to take my braids out tonight. I miss my hair. J thinks im crazy because it took a long time to install and I've had them for only 3 weeks. Meh I want em out. I wish my daughter was old enough to help me.
J also called me a hair product hoarder. -_- I'm not. I have a few things but they all fit in a basket in the bathroom. If I was hoarder I would have hair stuff everywhere. He's a dude so he doesn't and won't get it. ETA: My hair is at that awkward length, it's not long but not short. The shrinkage isn't helping. I attemped a twist out that failed and I now have it in a puff which doesn't look too good at the moment. Sent from my SGH-T999 using CurlyNikki App Last edited by keema; 02-20-2013 at 11:53 AM. |
