You can do portions if you want. Some people only do new growth. This lady does parts of her head with henna and indigo.

More henna questions hahaha!

1. After I apply henna to a section, can I twist it up...or bad idea?

3. I have VERY dark, pretty much black, hair...as many other African American curlies do. Soo I'm wondering what are some ways to get the best color possible the 1st try? With no additional drying affects or tangling affects (soo no lemon juice). I will be hennaing overnight (will that color more?). I have heard of paprika and hibscus..are these good?

3. What are some good conditioners to rinse the henna out with? VERY slippy and VERY moisturizing. No silicones...and no proteins. I was thinking tresemme naturals, but not sure.

I end up with four sections that I twirl and pin with those good day hair pins from Sallys.

As far as extra color on dark hair, you could try hibiscus or paprika but I didn't notice any difference with hibiscus. I don't sleep in henna because it is too stressful for me. I toss and turn and worry about leakage.

I like to rinse with Sallys gvp balm. I have used suave sunshine something too. Just make sure keep your hair smooth during your henna treatment to avoid tangles later.

@CocoButter thanks! Do you know of any I could buy in a store, though?

@Lilly thanks! But what exactly do u mean by twirl? I've never really used a sally brand...any other brands (maybe one found at like target).

Last question...any tips on getting curls to loosen a bit w/ henna? I have a mix of 3c/4a curl pattern curls.

Ummm, twirl? I sort of twist a bit the twirl then wrap kind of like a Bantu knot but really loose.

Try going to an Indian market but make sure it is pure henna, no colored henna. I mean henna mixed with dye. No ma'am just get plain henna.

This is what I'll be using for henna:
Henna - Jamilla BAQ
Acidic quality - Red Zinger tea
Rinse out - Tresemme Naturals..the one that has moisturizing in the name
DC - Shea Moisture deep treatment.

I'm ordering the stuff this weekend.

I plan to henna overnight, and then DC overnight. Please give any suggestions!!

I am still very worried about the drying effects...has anyone had an bad experiences concerning drying effects?

@lily I was just wondering if by twirl you met twisting. Twirling just seems like it would cause tangling, to me.

Your plan is great, but your really do not have to leave the henna or the DC in overnight. Four hours for the henna and 1 hour for the DC should be fine. Just make sure your co-wash and DC is protein free: no wheat, soy, oat, pro vitamin B5, keratin, etc. Enjoy!

Thanks!!! I was gonna do it overnight cuz I'm lazy, and for maxium color & conditioning. My hair is pretty much black, with a brown glow in the light. And I'm afraid of dryness. Making henna, applying henna, rinsing henna, applying dc, rinsing dc, and then twisting my hair up and applying leave in and all that in ONE day would make me uber cranky hahaaaa!! I know how I get when I get frustrated with my hair...so I try to make it as little time consuming and stressful as possible. Is it a bad idea to do this overnight?

Indiecoils ...you don't have to do it overnite...but it depends on the purpose you want. Leaving henna to sit overnite releases dye content. Either you are using it to get tints of color or just strengthening the strands and condition purposes.
