Talking Henna dried my hair! HELP

Question: I did henna on my hair for the first time on June 2 using ACV & Giovanni conditioner. Ever since then my hair is hard to keep moisturized {a probelm I never had before} now. What did I do wrong & what tips do you recommend? I plan to henna for a second time on Friday using coconut milk.

FYI: I used Raj and Amla in which I plan to use it again the second time around.

Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

Did you do a deep conditioning afterwards? Also make sure your conditioner doesn't have protein on it. Henna mimics a protein treatment. My hair is usually very dry after I Henna, but the moisture is restored after my dc. HTH

I think the ACV combined with henna/amla caused the dryness. If you're using amla you don't need another acid. I'm not sure where coconut milk is on the ph scale, but I would definitely keep it simple and leave it out for now. Try warm water with your henna/amla. I also mix in a little cheapie conditioner in my henna after dye release.

+1 on the above. Also, try eliminating the acv in your mixture; the amla is enough for your acidic property and replace the acv with warm, not hot, water.

Henna acts like a protein so I'm not sure if you should mix it with coconut milk cause that may be too much protein. Did you DC after your henna treatment? If not, I'm almost sure that's why your hair is acting like that. I DC for as long as possible (at the least two hours) after my henna treatment and it also takes a couple cowashes to get my moisture back up. I also usually wear twists a couple days after a henna treatment to help retain more moisture as well. Hope this helps!

Thank you ladies for the feedback! I didn't realize that the Amla was acidic! My main reason for using it was to retain some of my curl pattern. When I made the henna/amla mix I used 1 cup of ACV w/warm water then once the dye released I put in 1 cup of Giovanni conditioner.

I rinsed my hair thoroughly, washed it once with Carol's Daughter Monoi Shampoo and conditioned, conditioned, conditioned! Since then I have been do nothing but cowashes with GV Biolage Hydrate Conditioner & Curls Coconut Sublime three times a week.

My hair has never felt so "thirsty". So because of that I just leave the conditioner in my hair and style.

A friend of mine told me about her henna mix using coconut milk because it is suppose to be hydrating. I am truly at a lost here because my hair seems to get tangled all the time now and I am experiencing breakage which is very seldom for my hair. I just don't know.

I cowashed for an hour after the treatment and the following day. Since then I have been leaving the conditioner in and styling.

I'm having the same problem. Look on Kinky Coily's blog page for additional tips and products that she recommended to me. I've been mistakingly using the same products as before and they have small amounts of protein. I got protein free stuff today. Good luck.

Acv is strong. Don't use it unless ratios is on point. 1 cup is to much for anything. Do moisture dc over night & repeat if necessary.

AVC is way too strong and drying. I experience dryness also after henna sessions so I've been adding warm water to my henna mix. After dye release, I add honey and that seems to help a bit.

The only henna that I've used that didn't dry my hair was from mehandi.com but I think it may be too potent or I'm allergic to that brand b/c I always got the itchies for a few days afterwards. Right now, I've been using the red raj. I read somewhere that grocery store honey isn't really honey so I've been adding that to my henna mixes since I'm not going to use it for my tea. I've also co-washed with Aussie 3-minute miracle and that has also helped with the dryness.
