I actually think it depends on your strand thickness and what conditioner you are using for a co-wash. There are cleansing conditioners out there like Curl Junkie Daily Fix and Deva Curl No-Poo. I haven't used "real" shampoo on my hair for about 6 months and I don't have a problem. Then again I wet and condition every day and I cleanse with a no-poo every other day so maybe the frequency of the wetting is preventing build-up. I also think that the thinner your hair strands (finer hair) the more sensitive it may become to build-up from products and conditioners. On the other hand a lot of people with thin hair want more weight on their hair to elongate their curls and prevent frizz. Conditioner only cleansing can help finer hair types to achieve weightier hair.
