Don't know what the question was, but my hair is 4J. Because it doesn't really "fit" into the little boxes. So it's just "4Jennifer.

I can totally see how the "guidelines" help some but then it gets wound up being taken to another level because of these "rules" someone made up. I feel like typing just kind of makes a segregation amongst others in the natural hair world. I remember reading a post with someone asking "what's my hair type?" and was sooo infuriated when someone suggested they looked like a 4a -_- they argued TO THE DEATH that they were 3c and it's like.. What the heck?? Why does it matter so much? Can't you just be grateful you have hair at all?? I think once people have the idea their in a certain class of hair type, they shut out other ideas when I remember watching a naptural video and she said " I thought I was 4a but I think there's a little bit of everything going on in here.." same remains true with most of us. There is no one type.

That's why when someone asks what their pattern is I try to explain that curl pattern is the least important thing to be concerned about. Figure out your density, porosity, thickness, etc. I normally don't mention protein but you're right as everyone's hair has different protein needs.

As another poster stated. They don't teach you about natural hair in cosmetology school. Only virgin hair in regards to chemical processes.

Agreed. Originally I saw my hair as a 3c/4a mix only but I know now that's not set in stone. I'm noticing I have many other patterns in there. I have parts of my hair that are straight and will not curl just as I have parts that are wavy just as I have parts that are very kinky. My hair is all over the place. Now is there one pattern that stands out more so, yes. But it doesn't matter to me anymore. I just want happy healthy hair.

I just go by if your hair is kinky, curly, wavy, or kinky-curly... Much easier. I know my hair is kinky so im either 4a, 4b, or 4c. But im pretty sure im 4a/4b.
