If Albany, or anywhere Upstate peaks your interest, then please feel free to ask any questions. Will try my best to be of assistance.

Full disclosure:I am considering relocating (though not 100% sure as yet). Best of luck to you.

Living in the downtown area with all the restaurants and bars can range from a mere $600 (usually a large two room studio) to 700 for one bedroom, although I have seen one bedrooms in the Central Square (downtown) area go for $650. Take a look at some of the prices on craigslist so you could have a better idea. I remembered you mentioned that you would not mind the "not so ideal parts" Rent there can sometimes be comparable to the Downtown area, but sometimes, a tad bit lower.

Another area you should explore is the state's job website so you could see the jobs and salaries (All NYS though, hence you most likely would have to exams). Since this is my second post, I am not sure if I am allowed to post links, but will try to include the state link here.

Honestly, Albany is not the most exciting place, however, if your goal is to save and build a future, once you are able to get a decent paying job, you can live quite comfortably here.

Albany sounds seriously cheap, even cheaper than Houston!! Wow! Apartments here easily starts at 1200 for a 1 bed between 550-650 sqft. Houston has gone up probably 10% on apartments in the last 4 years. And if you want something downtown then you will pay well over 1800 for a 1 bed. But I want to get out of the south and had plans to move to NYC! I graduate in May, so I'm very excited!

It definitely is affordable Kesha - just keep in mind it's far from the city that never sleeps, NYC. Honestly, if I had to advice a younger sister or someone wanting a new start, then Albany area is not bad at all. As I pointed earlier, a look at their State's website with the jobs available can give you a good indication of how well you can accumulate wealth. Can I ask, what are you majoring in?

I checked out the website and it definitely looks like a great place to live. I like the fact that I can take the Amtrak into Canada!! And it's still only a few hrs drive from NYC. It's closer than me driving from Houston to Dallas which is 4 hours! How's the night life, entertainment, dating, etc for a 30yr old female?
Would like to move-imageuploadedbycurlynikki1357751184.003334.jpg

Hello Kesha - thankfully your majors are quite marketable, and because it's so centrally located, you can be in another State within hours. You mentioned that you are considering technology- know that the area (often referred to as the Capital region) is being praised for it's innovations in nano-tech, if that interests you. There is the college of nano-tech, RPI, and international powerhouse: Global foundries if interested. Side note: the president of RPI is a sister (she may be the only black female to hold such a post). Not sure if you will be pursuing graduate studies in Texas or elsewhere...

Nightlife: Really not the best, unlike NYC, however, Sarratoga is less than half hour away and has quite a lovely night scene with great food. Again, this will all depend on what you're into. That being said, there are lots of decent restaurants in Albany. Having lived here for just over two years, the area continues to undergo great changes. I am not a club-goer, however, I do know there are little music go to spots in the area. Lot's of bars though.
Men: Depending on your preference, it's predominantly white young men I see around the place...

Sounds great! Seems like I'd be quite comfortable there for a while. I'm not a club person myself but like entertainment. Opera, theatre, wine, etc... I'm not open to any nationality for dating. I just ask for the guy to be educated, handsome and responsible. I planned to go to graduate school out of Texas.

Also what is the crime like there. I may take a trip to Albany in march instead of going back to NYC. I can always drive from there to NYC.

Good to know (By the way Keisha, I tried responding to your email, however, the mssg did not go through as your inbox was full?). My honest assessment of crime in the area is that it is relatively safe, the exception being, areas with a heavy poverty concentration - that's where the shootings I have heard of occur. You may want to check out crime stats. Petty crimes, like theft, is usually higher in the area where most of the college students reside. I think the police force do a great job in trying to keep the streets safe. It's not a dynamic place, but, livable. Here is a link to a blog that captures some of what goes on:

* Keisha: do let me know once you clear your inbox so I could fwd you the info requested.
