How can i convince my mom to let me go natural ? Im a 16 year old junior in high school (class of 2014!) and i have been getting relaxers since the tender age of 2 ! Im African american and My mom says my hair was so nappy that she couldn't deal with it so she threw a "just for me" relaxer in my hair and i have been getting relaxers approximately every 4 weeks(except for when i have weave) ever since . My hair is very thin and my edges are slowly becoming non-existent . My hair is a little past shoulder length &' its now becoming as we call it "trained" with relaxers .. Up until about a year ago i was fine with relaxers but after doing research on them, i realized that its damaging my hair . Heat damage, chemical damage, you name it and my hair has been damaged by it ! My last relaxer was somewhere between the fourth of july and My birthday(july 26th) . So im atleast 2 months natural . I currently have rope twists(Senegalese twists started off by plaits) with kankelon hair and have had them about 1 month . Recently , my edges have broken off more so i will be taking these twists out off my hair in about 8 days ! I have been doing alot of research on natural hair for these past few months and i realized that i REALLY want to go natural and im very adamant about my decision. The only problem is that my mom refuses to let me ! If it was left up to me , i would have been natural months ago . * *She says she refuses to let me walk around looking a mess with nappy hair . But i really really want to do this ! How can i convince her to let me go natural ? My original plan was to transition until june (school trip to belize) and then big chop.. But now i sort of want to big chop in december/ january ! How can i convince her to let me go natural ?*
Ps.. Sorry its so long

Try showing her youtube videos of naturals so she can see what natural hair is capable of.

My mom didn't want me to go natural either. I big chopped without telling her. She was pissed at first but now, 8 months later she loves my hair. This might not be a good option for you, because it could get you into trouble but it worked for me.
Btw I'm class of 2014 too!

Tell her you want to give your hair a break and keep it braided until the summer...That will buy you some time and hopefully your new growth will change her mind

I'm a junior too, but tell your mom that you really want to do it and why. Tell her she would spend less money and that you would feel more secure or something lol. But seriously, I always said that my mom could not make me get a perm, if she does just mess it up. My mom let me big chop though.

show her youtube vids and articles on why relaxing the hair is bad for her hair. lol tell her that if u continue to use relaxers u wont have much hair left. Who knows, u might have beautiful curls under there. I never knew i had type 3 hair till just now cuz before relaxers i never knew how to take care of my hair so i put a relaxer in it cuz it was "manageable"

I'm a junior too & I didn't ask my mom. it's MY hair, why should I ask? if you really want to do it, I suggest you save your money & go to a salon.. or if you transition for a long time, chop on your trip. (:

Um my mom told me that im NEVER gonna cut my hair but i told her i was going to in oct. of 2011.. and i did because i was tired of my hair n i did the same thing as you , i went online to see about going natural.. i Hated my hair .. it took so long to put it in a ponytail and perms n relaxers .. i been getting them for so long i was just tired of them , i Hated perms..
At first when i cut it i just tried transitioning to natural hair , That was sooo Hard , my hair was looking very unmanagable n i hate the look of it .. so in 2012 of may i did the big chop .. i loved my big chop but it took a lil while for me to get used to not having alot of hair .. There was just a bunch of trials with having completely natural hair .. Didnt know what my hair type was .. didnt know how to do my hair or how to take care of it .. i just had to do alot of things to see what works n what doesnt .. I just re-did my big chop on october 20th , if you do the big chop Make Sure you cut it All the way off as if you're a dude so it'll all be Even .. my first big chop wasnt even so i decided to re do it since i have an idea of what works n what doesnt on my hair .. i think a salon would be a better decision for you to go to when you get it cut off or a barbor shop .. i Do hair so i know about it but never knew bout the natural stuff , i just cut mine off until it all was even it took forever but i like the results! People always have something to say about my hair though but Some people give me compliments on my hair since i look right with having No Hair at all they think its "cute" lol well my friends do .. my family still says little comments , especially my Mom lol. she hates my hair but i just tell her , "it's my hair Mom.. and i look right with it like this" i just know in the end my hair will be healthier n Prettier as it grows out n thats all that matters to me.. i always wanted a head full of hair , Long n Thick n this is the Way to do it lol.. so why not.. i think you should tell you mom , that at the end of the day it Is you Hair and that your hair is damaged right now n it needs to be properly cared for n thats gona happen by going natural .. if i was you i would just cut it in december n get it over with & go to your mom n say "Look" ( : .. i mean whats the worst that shes gonna say to you other then i hate your hair or Nappy head .. lol my mom lol calls me nappy head all the time but im Not offended b/c my natural hair isnt "nappy" and thats just how the people in my house is .. we call names .. n we get over it . but Mind you Everybody n they grandma is gonna have something to say about your hair .. "Why u cut your hair?" Why dont you put weave in your hair" Why dont you straighten your hair.." it's really annoying but now i just say .. its my hair and i look right with it n leave it at that .. Hope i helped some .. and im a senior but first cut it when i was a junior. Last edited by NaturalBree; 11-10-2012 at 10:26 AM. |

black ppl have this thing about hair cutting because we have been told for so long that it doesn't grow or doesn't grow fast enough to be able to cut it. Once your mom sees that after you BC your hair will only be a tea for a short amount of time.( unless you decide to keep it short) good luck!

I transitioned for 6 months and then big chopped my hair. I was practically bald and my mom and dad hated it! But after a month, she said that she wanted to chop her hair off because of me and told me to keep it short because I looked like a "nubian princess" lol.
The thing with parents we have to understand is that most parents aren't comfortable with their children making drastic changes to their body especially when they have been keeping it a certain way for years. Make the effort to stand up to your mom. Show her some Youtube videos of naturals. Tell her that our hair is not nappy. Its beautiful. Once you do chop, trust me she will get used to it. It may take her a while, but she will, and will accept you because she knows you are beautiful no matter what hope this helps!Sent from my ADR6350 using CurlyNikki App |
