Default Anyone else with unsupportive parents?

My dad isn't as unsupportive as my mom. She says things like 'Don't put your hand in your hair, you'll draw attention to it' or 'Why is it sticking up all over the place' and 'Why can't your hair pattern be looser' Other times it's just like subtle clues that she doesn't like it. I just want to shout sometimes 'OKAY mom I get it. You don't like it, but you are going to have to get over it.' My boyfriend is more supportive than she is, telling me to be patient and that I'm beautiful and he loves my hair (AND he's only half black!). My dad just says stuff about other women who have cut their hair: 'She looks like a man! What is the world coming too??' He never says that to me, though. Does anyone else have this problem? How do you deal with it?

Similar. When I have my hair out my parents says it looks 'tacky'. My dad prefer me in dreads (which I don't want anymore) & my mom wants my hair constantly braided. I currently have yarn braids as a protective style, other than that I LOVE my hair out. Don't mind them. Love and embrace you. It's annoying, but don't let it get to you.

Yea, my mom didn't like the whole bc thing either. And like Amorenicey she wants it to be in braids all the time too. The thing is I had it in braids for a long time but I have a hard time taking care of my hair under the braids so it basically stunts my growth. Very annoying..

My dad looks at me funny whenever I have my hair twisted or in any natural style, my mom has come around a little bit but she doesn't really believe in my change I products (I only use natural and organic products) even though I have done the research. My dads side (white) definitely don't understand and it's so annoying.

But I just say forget them and everything they say. I know how annoying it is to try and educate people but I just tell myself "when my hair gets to my ass and is healthy and full they'll be coming to me taking notes". It's almost at the middle of my back so I just can't wait for the day be happy with yourself you are a beautiful black queen!

My dad hates the idea of me going natural. Especially about the bc. He even hates the THOUGHT of me cutting my hair. But the way I see it is, I'm 18 & just graduated from high school. So i think I can make a decision as small as changing my hair style by now!! You should too. It's you hair! Embrace it!! Lol.

@zenolay; you're welcome!

@Newbie12; girl my dad almost dropped tears when I got my hair cut in 8th grade lol! But it's good that you're going natural now! The earlier the better!

My mother and grandmother were very unsupportive, omg. My mom would be like "I don't want you going around looking like a 'wooly head'." Then my grandmother would always say she'd pay me to get a perm. So, during my transition I had to have my hair straightened every two weeks. I would seldomly do protective styles because I didn't want to lose my curl. Your parents might be more supportive once you get more length to your hair. When I because completely natural, my mom and grandmother ended up really liking my hair because it had more length and what not.

Oh god I went natural a year and three months ago and my mom hated it. She literally was both to kill me. Lol I big chopped by myself and cut all my hair off and my mom was so mad at me. Before I bc'ed I always kept my hair in extensions and my mom was like I can't braid that (but she ended up doing it lol) Each time I took my hair out of braids my mom would complain about why it was so short. So I never got to wear my natural hair out. All throughout last year my mom kept asking me to relax my hair. THEN two weeks ago, I took my hair out of braids and it finally started showing some length and now my mom compliments me all the time :3. My dad prefers that I keep my hair natural, he hates it when I wear extensions, he's always like "everyone knows thats not your hair" which is why I am so happy that I am natural <3
