I feel so lost I'm a beginner. I've only ever knitted small things like earrings. I want to make a galaxy or chunky scarf. I don't even know what a skein is lol
-___- I just know I will need larger needles than I already have and lots of yarn.

So what if the yarn comes in a huge oval? How much will you need for a scarf? I ask because the one I wanted from Wal Mart came like that.

same thing the oval is a skein of yarn. Depends on the length/thickness of the scarf you ant to make.

I say find some patterns, figure out what size hook/needle you need, and take it from there. But I would at least get 2 skeins also check the length on the skein of yarn before you buy it.

Yes. It's like this: Say your pattern calls for 500 yards (roughly 2 skeins worsted). You will need 2 skeins per strand of yarn you want to use. Doubling means you will need 4 total skeins, tripling you will need 6 total skein, quadrupling you 8 and so on.

A skein is a ball (although, its not considered a ball until the skein has been wound as such) or hank (yarn wound in circles and twisted spirally).

You should look at the yardage (or the number of skeins) needed if you are using a pattern as it should tell you. Worsted weight yarn which is what Whore-Mart sells mostly (except the Lions Brand Homespun and Thick and Quick yarns - Those are Bulky yarns) will give you more yardage than the bulky yarn will.

As KC said, make sure to check the yardage prior to buying it. Oh and always buy enough of that dye lot (color) to finish your project. Ain't nothing like running out of yarn before you're finished.

SN: If a multi color yarn is what you're using try doubling/tripling it with a solid color yarn. The solid color yarn will make the multi color stand out a bit more. It also gives the scarf the appearance of depth - my personal observation.

Happy Creating! Can't wait to see your finished scarf. 😀

I just want to say I'm getting the hang of reading crochet patterns. All smiles. I'm working on a hat for my friend and its a pretty simple pattern, but I feel like I'm accomplishing something because it actually makes sense. Lol
