Hey! I'm lazy as hell however..if you are making a garment then it is important. I found out the hard way because my hats come out huge!

Gauge is a way of making sure your project will have the measurements the design intends. It's a sample you make and measure. I like to get right to it, but the owner of my Local yarn Store fusses at me often. So you make a square o you can measure the number of stitches you get in an inch. If its dead on you are good, if not you may have to change needle size. Does this make sense? If not I will find a good video that explains

Thank u that's better but I am thinking about giving up. I was so excited about leaning and all the things I could make but I seem to b doing a lousy job. I hate math n u gotta keep counting and somewhere along the line for me there is a disconnect n I AM NOT DOING IT RIGHTTTTTT!!! (deep sigh) I feel a little better now that I got that out. Help should I abandon crochet try knitting or just quit?

Hey Nappygurl42.. don't get discouraged. In the beginning it's always difficult to get the math part of it down. It does get easier, so just keep practicing. Have you checked any videos on YouTube yet, for example, learning the basic stitches? Just focus on making simple items like squares or circles for now and don't worry so much about making a finished piece yet. Just practice and get the hang of having the hook and yarn in your hands and working your dexterity. That takes the pressure off of "making something". Or try a simple pattern like a washcloth.

Once you feel you're ready to tackle a pattern, then yes gauge tells you whether or not your piece will match the dimensions of the pattern you're working from, or not. A larger hook will make a bigger stitch, and therefore, a bigger fabric. And vice versa for a smaller hook.
