Default Inspiring/Current Fashion Designers?

My dream is to become a Fashion Designer. I don't know anyone else who is or would like to be one, and I would like to meet others to talk to and get advice from them. Also, feel free to show your work here!!

I would love to do makeup too!! But I took sewing lessons when I was 12 until I was 14. So there is a lot that I still don't know as far as an advanced level but I kind of teach myself little techniques. I hate hand sewing lol but there should be beginner classes at your local fabric store and I also buy fashion books from Barnes&Nobles.

And I actually have a book on beginner tips but I left it in my dorm room!! =/ So I will post them as soon as I get back to make sure I tell you everything 

Sorry fort the late response, but I now have the book of tips here given to me when I was taking sewing lessons

Tip1: Before you begin a new sewing project, make sure that you first have assembled everything you need. This includes a sewing machine (or needle), a cutting surface(large table or cutting board) fabric, pattern, thread, sharp scissors, tape measure, ruler or yardstick, marking pencil, sturdy pins and pincushion, iron, and ironing board. If you own a sewing basket, keep it nearby your sewing area

Tip2: Take time to place and cut out your pattern pieces carefully. A mistake in cutting cannot be fixed easily like a poorly sewn seam. Prepare your pattern pieces for use by ironing them lightly. Press the fabric first to get rid of any "bumps". Make sure you have everything right before using your scissors. Study the pattern guide sheet. Follow all directions exactly. Transfer all important markings (like darts and notches) from the pattern to the fabric

Tip3: Try to use 100% cotton or polyester/cotton blend fabrics for your sewing projects. For beginners, these are the easiest fabrics to work with bc the dont have much stretch and they will "stay put" as you sew. Avoid plaids or one-way designs at this stage.

Tip4: Use quality thread for all of your sewing projects. Always select the best thread that you can afford like Coats and Clark. Inexpensive thread can fray, break, knot, or cause lint to collect in the sewing machine.

Salvage: The edge of raw fabric which is bound and unable to fray.
Seam Allowance: The area of fabric that is between the seam stitching and the cut (raw) edge.
Test Seam: A seam stitched on a scrap of the fabric to make sure the machine is properly threaded and to check the machine stitch quality.

Back Tack: A few stitches made using the reverse-stitching button to reinforce a line of stitching. This is usually done at the beginning and end of a line of stitching to make sure the threads dont separate

Pivoting: Moving the fabric around with the machine needle in it and the presser foot raised.

Edge stitching: A row of stitching that appears on the very edge of a garment, usually about 1/8" or less from a seamline, foldline or finished edge. It is best to use a thread that matches the fabric color

I hope this is helpful

YES I love taking old clothes and making them into something new... Especially shopping at thrift/antique stores, I find the most unique items to work with on a good day lol

For me living on campus, it's hard to keep up with my sewing skills =/
I have no room for my machine and I only go home about twice a month.
Has anyone conquered living on campus and keeping up their skills??
