Default Home Decor

Hey everyone, I'm thinking I would like to decorate my apartment (yes I rent, but I'm going to be here for a long time and I want to make the space more my own). What my landlady will allow is basically anything short of tearing down walls. We can paint, wallpaper, change the floors, install shelves, etc. She's pretty cool about that (plus if I improver her property I'm really doing her a favor..lol). I have about 1500 sq. ft. to play with, a deck and a good sized backyard.

If anyone has any tips, links, advice, etc. about how to go about a full apartment redecoration, please share! And if you've done a makeover on your place please show it off.

I rent too! I love the Homegoods Store! It is apart of the TJMAXX and Ross stores! I find they have nice products on sell! I love to shop thrift stores! My recommendation is reading home magazines especially better homes and gardens bc they tend to do an apt section that focuses on smaller spaces! Also Hgtv love thAt show even though I'm only 25 lol
I also believe you should write or draw out things that inspire you! For instance I love natural elements! I love items that Are found in nature! So I focused on earth tones and woods and water! Candles!
Good luck!

These are great suggestions. Especially the one about looking through magazines. You've inspired me to create a decorating loom book for home decor

Hey there! I agree with looking at HGTV and magazines. I moved into a new apt earlier this month and took it as an opportunity to switch things up. You should be able to find tons of cheap decorations at places like Ross, Marshalls, TJ Maxx, Burlington Coat Factory, etc. A lot of stores that sell clothes often also have nice and affordable home decor items. Sometimes you can even score big in their clearance sections. Not saying that you have to buy new stuff to make your place look good but I always end up getting some new things, lol. Take inventory, you may be able to repurpose some of what you already have. One thing that has made it easiesr for me to decorate is choosing a theme and a color. For instance, in my bathroom I choose to go with a kinda of Asian theme with green and brown to sort of represent the Earth and growth of living things. I wanted my bedroom to be kind of a haven and a place to relax so I went with a spa theme and used the colors black, white, and blue as a base. Both are works in progress but I love the looks so far. HTH!

I know it appears that what you're going through is unnecessary. It may be unnecessary for where you are but not for where you're going. This trial has a purpose.

Ooh you're reading my mind. I have a lot of clutter and "stuff" in my apartment, so I think the first step is to inventory and clear out the excess, see what I can re-use, and then go from there.

I love the color schemes you're working with Tiff, sounds very very pretty. The spa bedroom colors is basically what I'm going for too in my own bedroom. I have a dark brown wood frame bed, so I would like all white walls in my room to set off the bed frame.

Off to go find some decorating themes.

Not sure if you have one in your area, but Garden Ridge is a great store to find home decor items at low prices.

As for decorating advice, I need help too! lol. My mom actually is much better at decorating than me, so I depend on her a lot. One thing I have learned is that everything doesn't always have to match. Contrasting colors can look good together and its good to take risks. Thats a pretty large apartment you have, so have fun with making it your own!

Hi BajanPrinces.. I've never heard of Garden Ridge, so I guess they are not in my area. And I'm definitely not afraid of color. I am a painter (sometimes!) so I'm a color junkie for sure. My original plan for the bedroom was purple walls. The husband wasn't really feeling that idea..lol.

Maybe I can sell him on that for our living room which is currently in an olive green wall color with sandy/beige furniture.

The exterior of our house/apartment (what do I call this thing.. I guess it's a duplex?) is turquoise. Gotta love those tropical colors of Florida.

don't know if you have in FL, but I love kirklands. They are online as well and they have really nice things for the home at affordable prices. Also if you sign up for their email alerts the send coupons weekly, usually about 20% off. As a matter of fact I'm gonna go their during my lunch break to pick up some candles for my house. Happy shopping
